training & kit
Everything you need to prepare for the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge — optional guided training days, a wild camp experience, and a complete kit list of what to wear and carry.
Optional Guided Training Days
You can walk each of the Yorkshire Three Peaks individually as a guided training day to build fitness and confidence before the full Challenge. Each is a circular walk taking roughly 4–6 hours, and each training day is charged at £45 per person.
Pen-y-Ghent
The starter
Around 8 miles with a steep ascent on the path up from Horton-in-Ribblesdale. The perfect hill to begin your training and assess your fitness.
whernside
For stamina
A longer walk of about 10 miles, starting at Ribblehead and following the path along the viaduct and railway before a long climb. Less steep than the other two, so ideal for building stamina and endurance.
ingleborough
The test
About 11 miles from Horton-in-Ribblesdale, following the line of the full Challenge — a gentle start before a steep climb up the face. An alternative route from Clapham covers similar mileage with a different perspective and a slightly shallower ascent.
Wild Camp Experience
A Night Under the Stars
For those wanting more adventure, a bespoke two-day wild camp combines two or more of the peaks with a night camping in the wild. Any combination of hills can be arranged, though progress is slower because of the larger packs needed for the extra equipment. A two-day wild camp experience is £180 per person. Please book well in advance, as wild camping requires additional planning.
The Kit List
Choosing your equipment
Personal choice plays a big part in selecting kit, but our advice comes down to two things: comfort and practicability. Before the day, ask yourself — does it rub or chafe? Is it light enough? Does it hinder movement, or fit poorly? Is it doing its job: are your waterproofs actually waterproof, your boots strong enough, your rucksack the right size?
Below is what we recommend you carry for your own use, consumption and protection. Additional safety equipment — emergency shelter, a comprehensive first aid kit and maps — is carried by your Mountain Leader.
Downloadable Checklist
We provide a handy kit checklist to make sure you have everything you need.
Essential — to carry in your rucksack
- Rucksack (20–30 litres)
- Water (2 litres)
- Waterproof jacket
- Waterproof trousers
- Snacks and food for the day
- Hat (sun hat or warm beanie, depending on the season)
- Fleece or similar additional layers

To be worn
- Suitable footwear — we recommend ankle-support walking boots (see safety note below)
- Walking socks

Safety Note:
Slips, trips and falls are the most common cause of injury, and lower-limb and ankle injuries are common, which is why we recommend ankle-support walking boots — they also protect against bruising from rocks and stones.

- Mobile phone
- Camera
- Spare walking socks
- Gloves
Optional - your choice
