Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge - Your Questions Answered

Everything you need to know about the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge — the route, the day, safety, what’s included, and how to book.

It’s a 39.2km (24.5-mile) circular walk over Pen-y-ghent (694m), Whernside (736m) and Ingleborough (723m) in the Yorkshire Dales, with around 1,600m of ascent, traditionally completed within 12 hours.

Pen-y-ghent (694m), Whernside (736m) and Ingleborough (723m).

The route is 39.2km (24.5 miles). A typical guided day runs from a 7am start to around 7pm, within the traditional 12-hour limit.

It’s a genuine endurance challenge, but achievable for most reasonably fit walkers with some preparation. Every walk is fully led and supported and welcomes all abilities, so beginners are well looked after.

You can start from Horton-in-Ribblesdale (BD24 0HE), Chapel-le-Dale (LA6 3AR) or Ribblehead (LA6 3AS). We recommend starting and finishing at Horton and walking anti-clockwise.

We recommend an early 7am start from Horton-in-Ribblesdale to make the most of the daylight.

Please start with a full 2-litre water bottle. We’ll be able to replenish water at intervals, particularly at the lunch stop.

Please bring your own packed lunch and refreshments. There are stops at the Ribblehead Viaduct and Philpin Farm (café open 1 May – 1 Oct; vending machine year-round). Food is not included in the price, but can be arranged at additional cost.

Yes — toilets are available year-round at Philpin Farm.

Yes, your dog is welcome and is often a comfort to walkers. Dogs must be kept on a lead across farmland and under control around other dogs and walkers, and please be respectful of anyone who isn’t comfortable around dogs.

Safety, Fitness and Training

Every walk is led by a fully qualified, first-aid trained and insured Mountain Leader, with route planning and group safety cover included.

Your leader is first-aid trained and will provide aid and assistance. If any participant feels unable to complete the Challenge, the leader will assess the situation to ensure the safety of the individual and the group.

Please tell us at the time of booking if you have allergies, diabetes, asthma or any other health issue, and together we’ll discuss and agree a plan.

Some preparation is recommended. Each peak can be walked individually as a practice walk, and we also run training days to help you get ready.
